To expand on this, the OLPC program does not do individual orders. If
you want an XO-1, you will need to acquire it from eBay or another
second-hand source, or be prepared to buy quite a few of them. (I
don't know the minimum order size, but I would not be surprised if it
is over 1000 units minimum.)
To get an XO-1.5 or -1.75, you'll have to know somebody. I don't know
who I could recommend you to purely on the basis of scoring a newer
XO, though. If you can show that you intend to make software for OLPC
or some related project, you can get one as part of the Contributors
Program:

still have Sugar on my boot partition and have been hacking on drivers
