[OT] midi problems

Dennis Raddle
Ugh, more problems since moving to Win 7. Related to MIDI, not Csound, so this is off-topic, but hoping to find some idea where to look.

I also just moved from Finale 2010 to 2011.

I use a MIDI keyboard to enter notes into Finale. It seems to be randomly missing MIDI events, either note on evts or note off evts. If it misses a note on, then it will insert a rest where I want a note. If it misses a note off, then it will think I'm holding that note still and include it in every beat I try to enter. I have no idea why this would happen or where to look.

My MIDI interface is an M-Audio Delta card. I had to move to a  newer driver when moving to Win 7, so maybe it's related to that. But it doesn't seem to happen when I'm using my MIDI keyboard to play into CSound. CSound never misses an event.

If other applications don't miss any incoming notes than I suspect it
could have something to do with Finale. Have you installed/ran MidiOX?
It picks up everything your midi controller can throw at it. If
something strange is happening it should be easier to catch in MidiOX.

Yeah, I'm running MidiYoke and Midi-Ox. Finale is reading events from the output of one of the yokes. Midi-Ox is directing events from the physical midi interface into that yoke. Maybe I should have Finale read from the physical soundcard, but the problem is I like the ability to use Midi-Ox to manipulate and fork it out. Maybe more than one application can read from the soundcard.

Do you experience similar problems when you play directly into Finale?
Perhaps some messages are being dropped by MidiOX for some reason?

Re: [OT] midi problems

Hmm, tried playing directly into Finale (not going through MidiYoke or Midi-Ox) and all the same trouble. I'll contact Finale customer support and see if anyone has reported this. Adding to my suspicion it is Finale, it seems to happen (i.e. Finale misses events) at moments when Finale is busy.

Thanks for your ideas.
