Latest 2.7.0 Dev build - BSBGroups

Steven Yi
Hi All,

I've placed a new dev build of 2.7.0 at:

http://www.kunstmusik.com/blue_2.7.0_dev.zip

This has a new BlueSynthBuilder widget called Group (also in Effects,
ObjectBuilder, and Sound interfaces) that allows grouping other
widgets into a group.  The group has a nice look with a top title
label and should help to make nicer UIs.  One can group items together
by selecting, then right-clicking and choosing "Make Group".
Additionally, one can create a new group and then add items to it by
double-clicking the group to focus in on the group's edit panel. A new
breadcrumb bar is added to the UI to allow for navigating back to the
root group for the interface.

There's still some work to do on this, but I think it's at a stable
point now to make it usable for testing.  As usual, please be sure to
backup any work (including user instrument and effects libraries from
your .blue folder) before using this.  Opening this version of Blue
will update your libraries that you open and those will get saved once
closing Blue, making them no longer compatible with older versions of
Blue.  (This is of course the expected behavior when moving to a new
release of Blue, but I wanted to mention again just in case anyone is
using 2.6.1 for current work but willing to test this release.)

I have done some light testing with BSB, and will be checking Groups
within Effects, ObjectBuilder, and Sounds this weekend.

Any feedback very much appreciated!

Thanks,
steven

Re: Latest 2.7.0 Dev build - BSBGroups

Menno Knevel
i did some testing:
- normally, when testing, i rename my .blue to .blueOLD or something. Then i copy my libraries into the testbuild dev.
What i noticed was that there was only the dev directory - no (empty) libaries at all
- i start Blue but my copied Libraries are not there
- i found out how to create and build groups. It is the same system as the PolyObject. Items in items in items etc. Works great.

1. Is an option in percentage for the blackish transient color of the group possible?
2. why are my libraries not seen?

i thought i'd show you what i could change in 10 minutes, with an existing instrument

The groups are easy to move around, but perhaps the modules are a bit dark?
Of course, this is just a fast setup. It is nice to see what each module is for, and i could delete the big fonts that i had to use before in order to get some sense of what belongs to what.

I'm glad the libraries thing was worked out. For the colors, I think
it would be good to expose that as a property to set, together with
some other things (some better control over sizing, for example).  I
think because the initial implementation took a while to do, I need to
take a break and move on to other issues in the 2.7.0 tracker, then
will come back to add things like this. (After ensuring the
functionality is preserved for Effect, ObjectBuilder, etc.).

I've closed issue #312 (the one for groups) as the initial
implementation is done, but have opened up issue #353
(https://github.com/kunstmusik/blue/issues/353) to track any
bugs/updated features for Groups to do before the 2.7.0 final.

Thanks for the feedback!

Dear Steven,

I thought I’d join now to do some testing too… but is the executable to be downloaded on the link below also for Mac OSX or just for Linux/Windows?

Best,

Jan Jacob

Hi Jan Jacob,

Many thanks for offering to help test!  I have been only doing the
Windows/Linux build as it takes me a little extra effort these days to
fire up the Mac and build/test over there.  (I use my Surface Pro 4 as
my main computer now for the past year.)  If you would be willing to
test, I can put together a Mac build tonight.

Thanks!
steven

Dear Steven,

yes, I’d be willing to test but I could also install it on my Linux Ubuntu 16.04, now that I know that there is no installer for mac yet. What would you prefer?

All the best,

Re: Latest 2.7.0 Dev build - BSBGroups

Menno Knevel
i'd like to show my Xlooper2 using the latest BSB GUI possibilities:

i found that, once i had one sample module ready, that is was easy to just copy 3 more of them and all the copied faders and knobs got their new names right. So this works quickly and neat.
This way of Grouping forces a clean way to make synthesizer modules. The total instrument is calm and steady for the eyes (not very good english but i think you understand).

I tricked the Output module to get its present length by adding a dummy Add Value BSB. That one gets invisible for the user, so it can be abused for this purpose :P

I do think the whole instrument gets a little somber and dark.
I did not encounter errors.

Re: Latest 2.7.0 Dev build - BSBGroups

Menno Knevel
yes - it looks better, tidy, and better functionality...better overview of the signal flow from left to right.

Also, i was able, mostly by throwing away bloat information. Because the DisplayValue option can be set off now, it is possible to make the instrument more compact. Displaying this costs a lot of space- removing this allows the slider to be bigger!
For example, the EQ has no values presented anymore, and this lets you listen better to what is happening to the sound itself when you move the slider, instead of being distracted by moving knobvalues.

So - thanks for your kind words, Jan Jacob!
