Csound on FLOSS Manuals

joachim-3
Hi all -

as a contribution to make Csound easier to learn, and to make it
easier to share knowledge about Csound, we (= a couple of Csounders)
have started a free online Csound Textbook. Thanks to Rory's tip, we
situated it on the FLOSS Manuals site. In our neighbourhood, we have
manuals and textbooks about PD, Audacity, Ardour, or Gimp, Processing,
VLC and others.

This is the address:
http://en.flossmanuals.net/bin/view/Csound/WebHome

Until now, we have more or less finished the following chapters/
sections:
- BASICS
- QUICK START
- CSOUND LANGUAGE
- SOUND MODIFICATIONS (in parts)
- MIDI
- CSOUND IN PD
- CSOUND IN MAXMSP
- OPCODE GUIDE

So, though it is not finished, it may be useful right now. And:

If anyone wants to come in and help this project growing: please do!!!
(And don't believe if you see a chapter declared as "complete": there
is certainly something to do.) It is very simple: just register at the
site, and then you can correct what you read, you can add something or
you can start writing a chapter. I think everyone who wrote so far,
experienced the way of collaborative working here as very productive
and satisfying. Writing is a joint process, you can just start, even
if your english is not good, because there will be anyone who will
read and correct. This is the same for examples.

So both, feedback and contributions, is very much appreciated. If
someone wants to add new chapters or sections, this is also possible.
Perhaps in this case it would be good to cantact me or someone of the
editor's group (http://en.flossmanuals.net/bin/view/Csound/WritingConventions
) to keep the outline in consensus.

I feel very happy about the progress we have so far, and learned a lot
from the contributions (Andrés, Rory, Iain, Davis, François, ...).
Many thanks also to Richard Boulanger who supported this project and
helped discussing the outline.

Best -

        joachim

I think Dr.B's first chapter from the Csound Book is also freely
available (not sure of license, but you can ask him). Maybe you can
incorporate it?

Csound on FLOSS Manuals

Doctor B
In reply to this post by joachim-3
Dear Joachim and All Contributors to the new Online Csound TextBook.

This is a really great project.

It features excellent writing and fantastic coverage.
For me, it has a perfect balance of theory, content, examples, and
advice.

You already have an excellent team working on this project and I commend
and thank all of you for this major effort.

I hope that everyone interested in Csound will read this online text,
and I also
hope that many others will contribute their expertise and insights
into keeping
it a growing and living document.

Wishing you all - all the very best.

Yours in gratitude,

Dr. B.

Dear Richard -

thank you very much for your positive feedback. Without your
continuous encouragement, for this project and for so many other
initiatives in the Csound world, many things would not be possible. It
is so important to know you as a kind of mentor behind us. Stay going
with us and letting us know your advices.

Thanks again, and all the best wishes -

How do we actually read this manual? I see the links for editing, but
when I go to 'READ', csound is not listed there.

Thanks. But why is Csound not listed in the READ section?

I think it's because it hasn't been published/released yet. Until all
the authors sign off on it I don't think it appears under 'read'. I
could be wrong, the other may be able to give you a better answer..

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Csound on FLOSS Manuals

Yes. We are still in the process of writing. This is done in the
"Write" section, and you see the "59% complete" thermometer on top.
When all chapters are finished and reviewed, the manual can be
declared as "published", so it appears in the "Read" section, too.
Once a manual is published, it can be downloaded as pdf and there are
other options (see http://en.flossmanuals.net/flossmanuals).
When it's published, work can go on in the "Write" section, and it can
be republished whenever it makes sense.
