[Csnd] [OT] Useful controller?

genell
Hi all!

I happened by coincidence to stumble upon indications that the fairly newly released ROLI Lightpad Block works on Linux, which might be interesting to those who seek a relatively versatile midi controller.

What is even more interesting for some, perhaps, is that there seem to be an open SDK for the device so that one can customize communication between controller and software. Something for a keen developer to play around with and before we know it we have a Lightpad opcode.

I don't own the device myself so I cannot say much more about it, but ROLI's seaboard line of controllers at least seem highly regarded.

Regards,
Anders

Re: [Csnd] [OT] Useful controller?

It seems the SDK is part of JUCE?!
At least some of the Csound devs are already acquainted with that I believe...

I might actually break the piggie bank and get one - not that I can do any development but I looks quite useful already as a midi device.

Regards,
Anders

It does, but unfortunately not so appealing to those of us who use neither iOS or Windows.

Re: [Csnd] [OT] Useful controller?

genell
Well, it was reported to work as a midi device under Linux, and there seems to be a desktop software in the works...
The nice thing with a SDK though is that if someone writes an opcode for it for Csound, it should be possible to port it to almost any platform running Csound, provided the SDK code can be compiled on that platform.

Regards,
Anders

Yes, that's true, and I write Python code to interface with devices (e.g., Arduino) when I need to. But I would rather spend time making music than building infrastructure.

Re: [Csnd] [OT] Useful controller?

Yes, I can certainly understand that - I wouldn't know how to do it anyway.
Luckily the Csound community is a marvelous beehive of genius worker bees who like to share the sweet result of their efforts (or in some cases the somewhat less sweet-smelling result in form of boiled Irish vegetables), so before long there is sure to be a controller.

Until then I'll pass the time listening to a cd called "60~" that I happened to buy a while back :-)

Anders

Re: [Csnd] [OT] Useful controller?

I've been following developments on the JUCE forums. The SDK is out now while and seems to be fair easy to use. But I don't have 200 euros to buy one. I'd happily write an opcode in exchange for one ;)

There are a couple on eBay for half that price, but if all you live on is cabbage, I suspect that might be too steep as well ;-)

Regards,
Anders
